The National Weather Service says a weekend storm has made for the wettest September on record in Olympia and the second-wettest in Seattle.
By 3 a.m. Monday the rainfall total at Olympia was 7.98 inches, breaking the old record of 7.59 set in September of 1978. The normal for the month is 1.71 in Olympia.
At Sea-Tac Airport, the monthly total by 3 a.m. Monday was 5.60 inches, second to 5.95 inches in September 1978. Normal for the month is 1.50 inches.
The totals are more like the totals for December and January.
Meteorologist Dana Felton at the Weather Service office in Seattle say the weekend storm was more like the storms the Northwest sees in late fall and early winter.
Record weekend rains were followed by high winds Sunday night and Monday morning in Washington and the result was falling trees and limbs that knocked out power for thousands of utility customers.
The National Weather Service says winds on the coast Sunday hit 67 mph at Destruction Island, 51 mph at Hoquiam and 43 mph at Friday Harbor.
The front moved east before dawn and blustery winds were forecast through the day in Eastern Washington. Forecasters say cool, unsettled weather will last through the middle of the week.
Puget Sound Energy reported it had about 12,000 customers out of service about midnight Sunday, mainly in Skagit, Thurston and Kitsap Counties.
Seattle City Light reported it had about 3,200 customers out of service overnight.
