About 100 people gathered at Westlake Park on Monday for a peaceful protest in response to a grand jury decision not to indict Darren Wilson, a white police officer, in the death of Michael Brown, a black man, in Ferguson, Missouri.
The protest, called "Hands Up, Don't Shoot Monday,” was organized by a group calling itself Justice for Mike Brown.
"It's an epidemic the killing of black men. We need action from our national leaders, including President Obama,” said Queen Pearl, a protester in attendance.
"Having brown skin shouldn't be considered a fault," said Guy Chevalier, another protester. "And who has the right, the power to say somebody should die? Nobody."
The organizers were intent on demonstrating peacefully in order to demand justice. Attendees were urged to bring a whistle and use it to “blow the whistle on police brutality.”
Police in riot gear accompanied the protesters as they slowly marched on the streets around Westlake Park.
A similar protest on Friday shut down Westlake Mall. The mall remained open on Monday.
