The 18th Annual Latin Grammy Awards ceremony takes place on Thursday November 16 in Las Vegas. This week on Saturday Jazz Caliente, we'll sample the albums nominated for the Latin Grammy's Best Latin Jazz Album, and one that's in the Best Instrumental Album category.
The idea for separate awards for Latin music first came about in 1989, when a group of producers and songwriters felt that the existing Grammy categories were inadequate for recognizing the variety of Latin music throughout the world. They petitioned The Recording Academy and the first Latin Grammy ceremony was held in 2000.
Spend some time with these videos and get to know the Latin Grammy nominees I'll feature this week on Saturday Jazz Caliente!
One of the nominees in the Best Instrumental Album category this year is Spain Forever, the delightful combination of pianist Michel Camilo and Spanish guitarist Tomatito.
The 2017 nominees for Best Latin Jazz Album are:
Típico by Miguel Zenón's Quartet
Bajo Mundo by Oskar Cartaya
Dance of Time by Eliane Elias
Mr. EP: A Tribute to Eddie Palmieri by Charlie Sepúlveda
Hybrido: From Rio to Wayne Shorter by Antonio Adolfo
Jazz Caliente airs Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. The show is hosted by Robin Lloyd and produced by KNKX Public Radio.
