Ella Fitzgerald, 1948

On Tuesday April 25, we will celebrate Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday all day on KNKX.

Ella is, without a doubt, one of the most important and influential jazz singers of all time, and her centennial is a perfect time to review her life and contributions to jazz.

Listen for:

-- Susan Stamberg reporting on Ella’s early life on Morning Edition

-- Dick Stein talking with jazz vocalist Greta Matassa about Ella’s influence

-- Paige Hansen and Kevin Kniestedt profile Tacoma's Swing Reunion Orchestra

-- Tom Vitale reporting on Ella "the star" for All Things Considered.

-- and, of course, HOURS of Ella during Midday and Evening Jazz. Dick Stein, Robin Lloyd and Abe Beeson will share their favorite Ella tunes.

Don't miss the all-day Ella Extravaganza, Tuesday April 25, on 88.5 KNKX and knkx.org!

Originally from Detroit, Robin has presented jazz, blues and Latin jazz on public radio for nearly 40 years. A member of the Jazz Education Network and the Jazz Journalists Association, she retired from KNKX in 2023.
