Carlos Cascante y su Tumbao performing live in the KPLU Seattle studios on May 30, 2013.

Every Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. KPLU jazz host, Robin Lloyd, presents a feature called Jazz Caleinte—a set of three Latin jazz songs that are embellished by Robin’s comments and insights into all forms of Latin and Afro-Cuban jazz.

Recently Robin hosted her first live Jazz Caliente session with vocalist, Carlos Cascante, and his band, Tumbao.

Born and raised in Costa Rica, Cascante moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1996. As you’ll hear in this interview, he’s been busy with many musical projects since then.

You’ll also hear him with the current incarnation of Tumbao, raising the roof with all the rhythm, groove and joy that Latin jazz provides.

Tumbao consists of: Carlos Cascante (vocals), Julio Jauregui (piano), Dean Schmidt (bass), Edsson Otero (congas), Jeff Busch (drums) and Thomas Marriott (trumpet).
