A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, a founding member of the innovative Cuban group Irakere, a renowned classical musician who performs regularly with symphony orchestras around the world: trumpeter, pianist and composer Arturo Sandoval returns to Seattle's Jazz Alley this week.
He's won 9 Grammy Awards, the latest for “Dear Diz: Everyday I think of you,” a tribute to his friend and mentor. Rumor has it that a new book chronicling his relationship with Dizzy Gillespie titled “The Man Who Saved Me” will be released soon.
Arturo's life before and afterleaving Cuba was portrayed in the movie "For Love or Country." He provided the score for the film, and Andy Garcia played Sandoval.
Arturo stopped by the KPLU Studios last year for a marvelous live studio session.
"If you’ve got music in your heart, you’re gonna be a happy person, no matter what. I'm blessed. Can you imagine making your living doing what you love? I came from a very poor family from the middle of nowhere and could never imagine I would be able to do the things I have done. God has been good to me."
Arturo Sandoval and his band will be at Jazz Alley in Seattle this week Thursday through Sunday, March 21-24.
