Parker Miles Blohm

May 16 - 19, the Ballard Jazz Festival presents a big change in scheduling this year, but you'll find the same fantastic lineup of the Northwest's finest jazz musicians and internationally acclaimed talent over 4 nights in the city's increasingly crowded fishing village. Let's take a look at the changes, and preview some of my "must-see" performances.

Parker Miles Blohm / KPLU

When trumpeter Terell Stafford was nearing the completion of his classical trumpet studies in college, he was also developing an interest in jazz.  Since jazz was frowned upon by his classical mentors, Terell had to meet covertly with the school’s jazz studies professor, pianist Kenny Barron.  Barron agreed to help Stafford, but only if they could keep it a secret from the classical professor.  So Terell began going to jam sessions.

One night — well, no, we’ll stop here.  Terell tells the story much better in this performance/interview with KPLU’s Abe Beeson.

Clarence Acox is a professional drummer, a widely-heralded teacher who leads the award-winning Garfield Jazz Ensemble, and serves as co-director of The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra.  He was also the drummer for the 27-year run of a jazz quartet at The New Orleans Creole Restaurant.  Legendary trumpet and tenor saxophonist Floyd Standifer led the group until he died in 2007.  Clarence Acox renamed it The Legacy Quartet in honor of Floyd with various horn players rotating in his place. He continued the tradition until the restaurant closed in 2013.
