Winter is over, declares Cliff Mass

Winter is over, if you consider the threat of snow in the cities of Puget Sound a marker of winter, says KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass, a professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington.

"After the first week of March, the chances really go down to almost nothing, to get any kind of significant snow. And I can see that far with some skill," says Mass. The extended forecast is just too warm for snow below about 2,000 feet.

"It looks there will be no significant snowfall in western Washington this winter," he says.

As for this weekend, an unusual front of Hawaiian warm air will disappear by Saturday afternoon, bringing cooler, showery weather, he says.
