We Like To Watch: 'House of Games'

KPLU’s Dick Stein and Nick Morrison are always talking about movies, and are widely considered the movie experts around the station. Recently, they both ended up revisiting a David Mamet movie that was filmed in Seattle back in the '80s. So we thought, instead of them just sharing their review with each other, why not share it with everyone? They agreed, and produced the first, and perhaps only installment of what they call "We Like To Watch."

The review is of the 1987 debut release from David Mamet called "House Of Games." The film follows Margaret, a tightly-wrapped psychoanalyst and writer who wants to explore the world of con games.  She meets Mike, who turns out to be a con man, and becomes embroiled in this underground world.

While Stein and Morrison are both fans of the movie, Stein feels that perhaps the dialog is a bit stilted, and might be better suited for stage theater. Morrison explains that perhaps that is by design. He suggests that as the film goes on, everybody loosens up a bit, so the stilted dialog could very well be intentional in the beginning.

Another thing that both Stein and Morrison enjoy are the old Seattle spots you can catch in the movie. While the movie was designed to not be a scenic display of Seattle (intentionally, so that the story could take place in any city), a sharp eye can catch some very distinct late-'80s, Seattle locations.

Both Stein and Morrison recommend the movie to those who haven't seen it, but make it very clear: if you don't like it, they don't want to hear about it.
