Voter Registration Deadlines Drawing Nearer

Voters have until Oct. 10 to register online, and until Oct. 11 to get mail-in applications postmarked, because of a federal holiday.

Monday is the deadline to register to vote, online or by mail. But it’s also a federal holiday, so post offices are closed.

Because of that, county voter offices will accept registrations postmarked on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

“The state law does say Oct., 10, but we’re saying ‘Come on, people,'" said David Ammons, spokesman for the Washington Secretary of State's office. "If we followed the letter of the law, those postmarks would not be available on those previous two days.”

Ammons says it’s always advisable to register sooner rather than later, and online registration is the fastest way. In-person registration is available until Oct. 31.

Washington state added its 4 millionth voter in March. Since then, more than 170,000 people have signed up.

More information on how to register to vote is at myvote.wa.gov. Election Day is Nov. 8.
