The University of Washington is one of the highest-rankings schools when it comes to contributions to the public good, according to the Washington Monthly.
The school is also one of the magazine’s top 20 picks on its “best bang for the buck” list.
Contributions to Public Good
UW ranked 13th for its contributions to the public good, which rated schools based on three categories: social mobility, research, and service.
Within the categories, the school ranked sixth in predicted graduation rate of students receiving Pell grants, and third in research expenditures.
University of California – San Diego topped the list, followed by University of California – Riverside, and Texas A&M University. No other school in Washington state was named in the list of top 100 schools.

UW ranked 19th on the list of schools that offer students the best economic value.
Only schools meeting the magazine's criteria—349 universities out of 1,572—were considered. To qualify, the schools needed at least 20 percent of its students receiving Pell grants, and have a graduation rate that met or exceeded the predicted statistic given the number of low-income students enrolled. The schools also needed a student loan default rate of 10 percent or less—an indicator of post-graduation success.
Among the qualifying schools, the ranking was based on each school's net price, the "average tuition that first-time, full-time students from families with an annual income of $75,000 or less pay after subtracting the need-based financial aid they receive," according to the magazine.
Western Washington University ranked 54th, and Washington State University ranked 91st.
