Update: Snow falling, but Cliff Mass says it's almost over

Cliff Mass, KPLU weather expert and University of Washington professor, says the snow storm we woke up to is almost out of gas:

"... amazingly the worst is almost over. In fact, it should really be all over for most of the western side of the Cascades by 1 PM," he said.

He continues in his blog:

"The forecasts seems quite solid ... a few inches in the north sound, 2-4 inches around Seattle at low elevations, 6-10 inches around Olympia and south Sound, and MUCH more south of Olympia and north of Portland. Some extraordinary snowfalls around Napavine and nearby SW Washington areas--reports of 15-20 inches on the ground."

Associated Press story

As snow started falling on Seattle Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service scaled back the amount expected in western Washington but said it would still be a significant event.

Meteorologist Dustin Guy says the total in the city would likely be 3 to 6 inches. More is likely in southwest Washington — 4 to 8 inches. While less is expected in the northwest interior — 1 to 2 inches.

On Tuesday, forecasters had been talking about 5 to 10 inches in the central Puget Sound region, 6 to 14 inches in southwest Washington and 2 to 5 in the northwest interior.

Guy says the mountains will still get heavy snow — up to 2 feet by Thursday.

Widespread snow is forecast across eastern Washington.
