Times: U.W. picks Utah's Michael Young as its new president

Univesity of Utah president Michael Young will be named Monday to the same post at the U.W. , according to the Seattle Times.

The University of Washington will name University of Utah president Michael Young to the same post on Monday, according to the Seattle Times. KOMO TV isalso reporting that an announcement could be made Monday.

The Times said sources speaking on the condition of anonymity reported that Young, 61,president at the University of Utah since 2004 is the choice of the UW board of regents.

Young has a long resume:

  • Dean of the George Washington University Law School before taking the job at Utah
  • Twenty years on the faculty at Columbia University
  • A  graduate of Brigham Young University and Harvard Law School
  • Clerked for the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist
  • Served as an ambassador for trade and environmental affairs, deputy undersecretary for economic and agricultural affairs, and deputy legal adviser to the State Department under President George H.W. Bush
  • Served on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom from 1998 to 2005

The most recent UW president, Mark Emmert, announced last April he was leaving Seattle to become president of the NCAA. Phyllis Wise, who has been serving as interim president, said last summer she wasn't seeking the job permanently.
