Soul Food: Seattle Chef Kristi Brown Talks Culinary Power

Aug 5, 2017

This story originally aired February 4, 2017.

At age 13, Kristi Brown knew she would be a chef, but she remembers planning multi-course meals by the time she was 5.

"I'm a big believer in working on your purpose," she says, "That really is the only answer that you have if you want to be happy."

Brown worked her way up to the Kingfish Cafe, a black-run restaurant that taught her the power in food.  No other restaurants at the time served soul food with the pride of the owners and employees at the Kingfish Cafe, and Brown says it was invaluable.

"I'm still understanding the power of that now."

Brown sat down with "Hella Black Hella Seattle" co-host Alaina Cladwell to talk about the power of food and how she got her culinary start in Seattle.
