Seattle School Board members approved a contract through the 2016-2017 school year for new superintendent Larry Nyland.
The terms board members approved during Wednesday's meeting set Nyland's base salary at a little more than $276,000 annually, roughly $6,000 higher than former superintendent José Banda's base salary.
"Our strategy in our discussions was to continue with the contract we had previously used [with Banda]," board president Sherry Carr said.
Under the contract, school board members will set annual goals and objectives for Nyland every January, then evaluate him on his job performance every November.
The contract expires at the end of June 2017, roughly seven months shy of the maximum three-year term state law allows for superintendent contract. If the board offered Nyland a three-year contract, it would expire in the middle of the 2017-2018 school year, Seattle Public Schools deputy general counsel John Cerqui told the board.
As with Banda, the district will also provide Nyland with a laptop and cell phone, stipends for use of his personal car for work-related travel and a contribution to his tax sheltered annuity.
Nyland came out of retirement to lead Seattle Public Schools on an interim basis last summer after Banda left to be superintendent in Sacramento, Calif. The board had planned a national search to replace Banda, but changed course in December to offer Nyland the job.
The new contract becomes effective on Feb. 1. Until then, the district will continue to pay Nyland at the daily rate he has received while serving as interim.
