Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra swings Basie, Danny Quintero sings Sinatra on Jazz Northwest

Basie and Sinatra

Two titans of American music, Count Basie and Frank Sinatra teamed up for concerts and made three albums together in the 1960s.  The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra directed by Clarence Acox and Michael Brockman celebrated that fabulous combination in their November concerts when they were joined by Danny Quintero as guest singer.

The occasion also marked the centennial of Frank Sinatra's birth (Dec..12, 1915).  Highlights from this concert will air on Jazz Northwest, Sunday, November 1 at 2 PM PST on 88.5 KPLU, simultaneously streaming at kplu.org

Count Basie, leader of "the swingingest band in the land" and Frank Sinatra, the most iconic American singer of the mid-century formed a unique partnership growing out of a mutual admiration society.  Their three albums together provided the material for this concert by the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra with guest Danny Quintero.  The SRJO is widely noted for its authentic performance of music played by the Basie Band, and Danny Quintero has made a long study of Frank Sinatra and other singers of the period. This concert was recorded October 4, 2015 at the Kirkland Performance Center.

The next concerts by the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra celebrate another centennial, Billy Strayhorn, who was Duke Ellington's collaborator on many, many scores.  Those concerts in Seattle, Kirkland and Edmonds will be on November 7, 8, and 9, 2015.  Several concerts featuring Billy Strayhorn's music are scheduled during the Earshot Jazz Festival this month.
