OLYMPIA, Wash. - On a campaign swing through Washington, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said opponents of same-sex marriage should - in his words - "continue the fight."

"Fight for what they believe is the best, optimal situation for children to be raised in society and the optimal situation that government should support in terms of men and women coming together in marriage," Santorum said.

Santorum made his comments Monday in Olympia, the same day Washington Governor Chris Gregoire signed legislation to allow same-sex couples to wed. Opponents immediately filed a repeal referendum.

The former Pennsylvania senator met with Republican lawmakers at the Washington Statehouse Monday afternoon. He's scheduled to speak at a rally in Tacoma Monday night. And will appear in Coeur d'Alene Tuesday.
