Among the many holiday musical traditions is The Roosevelt Jazz Band's "Jazz Nutcracker" which has been presented annually in Seattle since 2000.
Based on the Tchaikovsky ballet score, this 1960 adaptation by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn has become a popular annual tradition in the Seattle area with the Roosevelt Jazz Band performing it this year on December 2 and 3 at the Roosevelt High School Performing Arts Theatre. Two selections from the score played by the Roosevelt Jazz Band are included this week on Jazz Northwest. Other upcoming performances are highlighted on this week including the Keith Henson Octet, Russell Malone and Dina Blade.
Another Seattle holiday jazz tradition is the Sacred Music of Duke Ellington performed by the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, this year on December 30.
