Roads remain closed as crews gain handle on C-Line fire

Department of Natural Resources
The C-Line fire is seen burning on Monday, May 6, 2013.

Fire crews were gaining a handle on the wildfire burning in the Capitol State Forest Tuesday.

At noon, the C-Line fire was at 70 percent containment at 80 acres, according to the Department of Natural Resources. Several roads and trails shut down by the blaze were to remain closed at least until the end of the day (see full list of closures).

The Dog Mountain fire, which began burning Saturday in Lewis County, was 60 percent contained at 160 acres. The blaze was not threatening any structures.

The causes of the two fires have not been determined.

With dry winds and above-average temperatures predicted this summer and fall, fire managers are preparing for an earlier-than-usual wildfire season that is also exceptionally dry.

DNR officials encouraged campers to completely extinguish all campfires. Homeowners were encouraged to prune trees taller than 15 feet, and to clear excess ground fuel as well as branches hanging over chimneys.
