Rivalries In Sports
Sports commentator Art Thiel tells us that a good sports rivalry is all about proximity and stakes. At the professional level, proximity can often be an issue for Seattle teams, being so far away from other sports markets. But he says one of the more exciting professional rivalries sprung up between between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers during the 2013 season when both teams had hopes to go to the Super Bowl. He also shared thoughts on the football rivalry between the University of Washington and Washington State University.
A Bare-Knuckle Rivalry Among Brothers
Many people know of Phoenix Jones, the Seattle based real life super hero. Many might not know that he has a brother. And as it turns out, there are plenty of things that these siblings don't agree on. So much, in fact, that they want to take out their aggression towards each other in a mixed martial arts setting. Gabriel Spitzer sat down with both brothers to talk about where this animosity comes from, and how they plan to worth that out.
A Rivalry In The Air
In the business world, two of the biggest rivals are Boeing and Airbus. But here in the Pacific Northwest, one company, Electroimpact, is a supplier for both of them. Reporter Ashley Gross talked to Gabriel Spitzer about what she learned on a visit to Electroimpact, and how they manage to keep trade secrets a secret when working for two competitors.
The Longstanding Rivalry Between Seattle And Tacoma
As the 20th century was approaching, Seattle and Tacoma were battling over which one of them would become the terminus for the railroad. At the time it was believed that whoever got the railroad would end up as the next big metropolis. Reporter Paula Wissel tells us that these were the early days of a rivalry that played a large role in the shaping of both cities.
Nirvana Vs. Pearl Jam: The Rivalry That Wasn't
Music rivalries date back to the days of The Beatles versus The Rolling Stones, with Seattle bands Pearl Jam and Nirvana also labeled as rivals. But music writer Charles R. Cross explains that most of these music rivalries are created by the media, and not by the bands.
