Rachel’s charity raises more than $1 million for clean water

A 9-year-old girl’s selfless dream has raised more than $1.26 million dollars for clean water in Africa.

Rachel Beckwith, of Bellevue, died in a car crash in July. She had turned 9 in June and said her birthday wish was to raise $300 dollars for the cause.

Her mother opened an account for donations, which she made public after Rachel’s death. Nearly 32,000 donations have poured in and the family says it’s time to close the account so they can put the money to work on the ground.

According to the Seattle Times, a spokeswoman for “charity : water,”  says a second campaign is now being launched to continue collections for people in need, while the work begins on fulfilling Rachel Beckwith’s young dream.
