Portland Singer Nancy King's Second Grammy-Nominated Album

Dec 17, 2017

Portland's outstanding jazz singer Nancy King has been nominated in the jazz vocal category of the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.  An underground favorite for decades, Nancy King has played international festivals and small jazz clubs, with orchestras and in duos in every type of venue imaginable.  A skilled improvising jazz vocalist who can be favorably compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter and Sheila Jordan, she's always gone her own way with her extraordinary ability to bridge the vocal/instrumental gap.  Her latest Grammy nomination comes from her role in pianist Randy Porter's album of Cole Porter songs, "Porter plays Porter" in which Nancy King sings on six of the nine songs.

In addition to celebrating a Grammy nominee from Portland, this week's show also remembers pianist Billy Wallace a former Seattle resident who died in Denver on December 7 at the age of 87.  His career began during the bop era and he recorded with musicians Max Roach and Sonny Rollins. He moved to Denver in the 70s, and enjoyed a long association with Floyd Standifer at The New Orleans Creole Restaurant in Seattle, Billy Wallace will be heard playing his composition "Tamra" with the Standifer group on this show.

Also this week, holiday music with Don Lanphere, Tony Glausi, Anton Schwartz, the SRJO, Jose Gonzales and Hans Teuber.
