Oregon Legal Pot Sales Begin October 1, Officially

Oregon marijuana dispensaries can begin selling marijuana as soon as October 1, under a law signed Tuesday by Governor Kate Brown.

It became legal for adults to grow and use pot earlier this summer, but new stores where they can buy it won’t open until later next year. Until that happens, Oregonians can buy weed from medical dispensaries.

“It’s exciting,” said Margo Sperry, owner of Urban Farmacy dispensary in Portland.

“It opens up another layer of integrating the recreational system and the medical system under one roof,” she said.

Sperry will be able to sell the products she sells now to recreational users, but it will get more complicated as new stores start to open.

Oregon’s Liquor Control Commission will license recreational stores next year, but dispensaries will have to go through the Oregon Health Authority. That means a lot of coordinating for a shop like Sperry’s that plans to sell both.
