A show for aficionados
The Star Wars inspired art show – "These Are The Droids You're Looking For" – features 65 paintings and a handful of sculptures, statues and collectables aggregated from dozens of artists both local and international.
For Seattle's geeky niche market, the sci-fi inspired gallery ranks up there with the EMP’s science fiction hall of fame and Emerald City Comicon.
“Opening night went great. We had tremendous support with 300 to 400 people coming through,” said gallery owner and exhibit curator James Monosmith. “Everyone really got into it, people were dressed in costumes – Prince Leia, Darth Vader, storm troopers.”
Inspiration for the Star Wars exhibit came from Monosmith’s own obsession with Star Wars.
The allegiance of nerds
George Lucas started a phenomenon, creating an undying following across multiple generations. Because of this unrelenting allegiance of nerds, Monosmith felt it was a no brainer to create a Star Wars art gallery.
“From an eclectic group of artists I wanted to approach the iconic characters from a new perspective, giving my audience a fun and different way to experience Star Wars,” he said.
The exhibit has thus far been good to L|td – the gallery has sold over 75 pieces.
“These Are The Droids You’re Looking For” continues to the end of January. Monosmith’s next project “I Heart Movies” opens in February, and will feature pop art from German illustrator Timo Meyer.
