The Northwest Flower and Garden Festival opened Wednesday at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. It runs through Sunday. On its 30th anniversary, the garden show features the traditional massive display gardens, but also newer on-stage events like Container Wars and Floral Wars. Think “Top Chef” but for floral arrangers and professional gardeners.
For example, Floral Wars contestants will each be given buckets of cut flowers and other items that they have to make into arrangements in a set amount of time.
Organizers say some of these sorts of events are meant to appeal to a younger crowd and apartment dwellers who don’t have yards that can accommodate waterfalls and giant boulders.
