WSU officials aren't laughing. Students are. A campuswide A/V prank at the Pullman school last Friday is the talk of the tech sites today, including Wired.com.
Disguised in a "V for Vendetta" mask, a student (presumably) broadcast a self-made video message to the school's classroom projection screens. In a charicature spoof of the V movie lead character, the prankster takes on the university's IT department, and the squirrels on campus, who "eat, drink and breed."
The prank drew this response from WSU spokesman Darin Watkins:, as reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education:
“Childish pranks just don’t have a place anymore,” he said. “What may have been seen as cute and clever years ago really doesn’t get that kind of reaction today,” Watkins said.
The university says shutting down the hacker's program was not easy. Some systems had to be manually shut down. They are taking the breach seriously.
The hacker's website is familiar to students and faculty as a place to find criticism of university administration decisions, such as budget cuts and tuition hikes. Watkins tellsthe Chronicle the pranking V impersonator could face serious charges.
