Moscow gunman kills UI graduate student, self

A University of Idaho graduate student was killed in an off-campus shooting Monday night in Moscow.

The homicide occurred on Lilly Street in Moscow, a neighborhood familiar to the University of Idaho community because of its close proximity to campus. Moscow police say the victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Witnesses told the UI Argonaut , the student newspaper, that they heard several shots. Moscow Police also confirm that the suspect in the case has died from an apparent self- inflicted gunshot wound. He is identified as Ernesto Bustamonte, a former faculty member who worked at the UI from 2007- 2011.

Moscow Police this morning executed a search warrant just before eight o clock at the Best Western Hotel on the Moscow Pullman Highway across the street from the UI campus, firing tear gas into the suspect’s room. Hotel guests had been cleared of the area first.

The UI has postponed the university convocation scheduled for this afternoon, and officials say they are both shocked and saddened by the events.
