King County Weighs 'Painful' Budget Cuts

They'd hoped to avoid this moment. King County leaders are facing some ugly choices to balance the budget.   King County councilwoman Julia Patterson tells KPLU News they hope to make choices that do the least harm to public safety and public health programs.  The final public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 11 a.m. in council chambers. Patterson says she's looking for ways to fund domestic violence initiatives that now face drastic reductions. Last week, voters rejected Proposition 1, which would have restored some funds for domestic violence work.

Amanda Knox Indicted over Police Brutality Allegations

Seattle native Amanda Knox has been indicted on slander charges for claiming she was beaten by police when questioned in 2007 about her roommate's slaying, according to the Associated Press.  Knox told the judge that she never meant to slander anybody and she was just trying to defend herself.  The former UW student is serving a 26-year prison term after her conviction for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher.  Knox, 23, maintains she's innocent of that charge.
 

Gig Harbor on Watch for Bear

Traps are set this morning for a black bear that mauled a Gig Harbor woman on Sunday morning as she walked her dog in the Rosedale area.  The News Tribune reportsthe victim survived the attack, suffering severe bites to her arm and back.  She is recovering this morning at a Tacoma hospital.  State wildlife agents are using bait traps filled with doughnuts and maple syrup to lure the bear. Once caught, they say, it will be euthanized.  Black bears have been seen in the area this year.  In May, a black bear made an appearance in a Gig Harbor backyard.

 

Seattle Schools Will Get Report Cards

Kids get report cards, so why not schools, too? That idea is being put into action in Seattle, and will be unveiled tomorrow.  KPLU News reports district leaders have crafted reports to chart performance across more than two dozen categories. There are a series of public meetings scheduled around the city about the new evaluations, which you can findhere.
