Saxophonist Roxy Coss was a guest soloist with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra in a November concert and she teamed with her former mentor Mark Taylor for a beautiful duet on Billy Strayhorn'sA Flower is a Lovesome Thing. Most of the concert aired on last week's Jazz Northwest, but this performance was held over for this week's show. Roxy Coss played in the Garfield High School Band under Clarence Acox, and studied with Mark Taylor and Don Lanphere while still in Seattle. She now makes her home in New York City where she plays regularly in a variety of jazz projects.
Also on this week's show, some unconventional Christmas music from Matt Wilson's Christmas Tree-O (which plays at Jazz Alley December 8-9), as well as Don Lanphere, and Anton Schwartz who plays a tropical version of Winter Wonderland. Anton Schwartz will play the KPLU Christmas Jam live broadcast at Noon on Thursday, December 10. News about best bets for live jazz with some samples are included.
