At a Monday night rally in downtown Spokane, members of the city's black community said they want to put former NAACP president Rachel Dolezal behind them.
Rally leader Dennis Mitchell urged the small crowd to waive signs saying “integrity matters.”
“We know a lot of things have been going on around this country, talking about Spokane, Washington, and we are here this evening to make a stand,” he said to the crowd.
Dolezal resigned as president of the Spokane NAACP on Monday. But chapter member Kitara Johnson said she’s still waiting for an apology from Dolezal for claiming to be black.
“We will rise above this and no longer settle for leaders who will not tell the truth,” Johnson said.
Members of the local NAACP accused Dolezal of opting to go on national television this week rather than attend a chapter meeting and explain herself to the community.
