Mass: Blue Skies, then Beginning of End of Summer this Weekend

Good news: summer's not over just yet! There are still some blue skies left in the forecast, says KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass.

"About two and a half days, to be exact," says Mass, who teaches Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington.

Friday's morning fog and clouds will clear way to blue skies and temperatures in the upper 70s and lower 80s, says Mass.

And Saturday will likely begin with morning clouds again, but they'll burn off and give way to another glorious day, says Mass.

"So, Saturday is going to be the nicest day of the weekend," he says.

Then on Sunday, a transition begins to cooler, cloudier weather. Sunday morning will have the same pattern, with low clouds burning off around mid-day, especially in the interior.

"But then, in the afternoon, thicker clouds aloft are  going to be coming in," Mass says.

And that may be the beginning of the end of summer.

Mass predicts that by late Sunday afternoon, showers will be entering the region, and we may see heavy showers and even thunderstorms by Sunday night.

Those are associated with a trough over the Pacific that's moving in and will likely keep the weather  substantially cooler and cloudier next week, with temperatures down into the 60s and occasional light showers.
