Two upcoming not-to-be missed performances of Latin jazz, Seattle-style:
Thursday May 16 (tonight) Tula's, 2214 Second Avenue
Fred Hoadley's Sonando
Multi-instrumentalist Fred Hoadley founded Seattle’s favorite salsa band Bochinche in 1983 and the Latin jazz band Sonando in 1990. Sonando’s three CDs have received critical acclaim throughout the country. Sonando also was given The Earshot Golden Ear Award for Best Acoustic Jazz Band of 2007, and was featured in a cover story in the November 2008 issue of Earshot Jazz Magazine. The band’s performance of the music of Charles Mingus was a highlight of the 2011 Earshot Jazz Festival. Sonando appears at Tula’s on the third Thursday of each month.

Lary Barilleau and the Latin Jazz Collective CD Release Party
Larry Barilleau, a Seattle-based percussionist, composer and award-winning educator, was a co-founder of Sonando. The Latin Jazz Collective is a project conceived by Lary in 2009. The group's goal is to provide quality latin jazz music that reflects the original music of band members. Their CD Carmen's Mambo features the original music of Lary Barilleau, Grammy winning arranger and trombonist Doug Beavers and multi-instrumentalist Jay Thomas. The CD was recorded over a 2 year span in San Francisco, New York and Seattle, and has been getting radio air-play nationwide. Carmen's Mambo was also featured as "Album of the Week" on the Latin Jazz Network website.

Joining both bands for these gigs is Belgian trombonist (and scat singer) Phil Abraham, on his first visit to the US. Mr. Abraham will be teaching choir, concert band and jazz ensemble clinics at Mercer Island High School on Thursday 5/16 and Friday 5/17, and at Hamilton Middle School on Monday 5/20.
