Advocates for the homeless in Kitsap County say there’s not enough money to provide services – so they’re talking about the possibility of a new tax.
It would most likely be a property tax levy, similar to one in King County that raises money for a special homeless and veterans fund.
Service providers and veterans tell the Kitsap Sun they need to make up for cuts from state and federal governments. The proposal would need support from county commissioners, at their meeting on August 8th. If they approve it, voters on the peninsula would see it on their ballots this November.
County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido told The Sun:
"I can tell you flat out that more and more people need assistance in this economic downturn, and some of those sources of assistance have evaporated."
