Holding On To The Magical Teeth Of A Black Dog

Joel Shupack
Lela, holding a few teeth from her dead dog, Coletrane.

This story originally aired on November 18, 2017.

Anyone who has ever loved a dog, and who has been on the receiving end of a dog’s unconditional affection, would agree that the grief you experience when that animal dies is deep and painful.

In this story, which originally aired on the podcast SquareMile, producer Joel Shupackintroduces us to his friend Lela who recently said goodby to her beloved Catahoula, Coltrane.

A quick battle with cancer took Coltrane's life. Joel and Lela hike along the White River in Central Oregon in search of the cave where Lela laid Coltrane to rest.

Lela, who has a mysterious illness herself, isn’t just going to say goodbye one last time. She is hoping to retrieve something from Coltrane, something to remember him by and something that might make her well again.
