Here's a rundown of the Latin Grammy Awards

Jeff Croft

Conguero and bandleader Poncho Sanchez will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Recording Academy (Latin Grammys) in November.  Poncho's collaboration with trumpeter Terence Blanchard Chano y Dizzy is also nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album.

Why Latin Grammys?

The Recording Academy® (Grammy) was founded 52 years ago and only focuses on products released in the U.S. (in the period of eligibility) and its members are located in the United States. The Latin Recording Academy® (Latin Grammy) recognizes recordings released anywhere in the world with the only condition being that they were recorded in Spanish or Portuguese.  The members of the Latin Recording Academy® are located in more than 30 countries.

The Latin Grammys have picked up the slack left behind by the Recording Academy's decision to eliminate or "consolidate" a number of ethnic music categories.  In response to overwhelming protests from Latin Jazz artists, The Recording Academy did re-instate a Latin Jazz category, but other categories remain reduced or overlooked.

The Latin Grammy Awards program will be held on November 15 in Las Vegas.

Miguel Zenon's CD Alma Adentro: the Puerto Rican Songbook  and Chick Corea's Further Explorations are both nominated for Best Instrumental Album.  Arturo Sandoval's recording Dear Diz  (Every Day I Think of You) is nominated for a Latin Grammy Album of the Year.

You can hear all these Latin Grammy nominees and more on Jazz Caliente, Thursdays at 2pm on KPLU's Mid Day Jazz.
