This week on Sound Effect, we bring you a special premiere broadcast of the live event we put on in May 2016. At the time, our station was raising money to buy our independence, so the Sound Effect team brought together interesting people from around Washington state to tell stories of friends in need.

Tim Durkin

Seattle photographer Tim Durkin is known for his stunning images of Seattle's skyline. However, he also documents the city's grittier side. Durkin talks about how he made close friends while photographing Seattle's homeless community.

Skerik's Bandalabra

In the first musical act of the Sound Effect live show, we invited saxophonist Skerik to the stage, joined by Evan Flory-Barnes on bass, D'Vonne Lewis on drums, and Andy Coe on guitar for what ended up being an intense, seemingly improvised song. Skerik then talked aboutthe wide variety of bands he is a part of, and where the name of the band The Dead Kenny G's came from.

Melanie McFarland

Have you ever wanted to clean up your Facebook page and unfriend almost everyone? Seattle-based writer Melanie McFarland tells this story of when she told her online connections to get lost.

Kimya Dawson

Singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson writes very intimate music that connects with her fans in a very personal way. Dawson shares one of her songs and exploreshow she sometimes loses herself in her need to be a friend to everyone.

Tom Robbins

Iconic American author Tom Robbins reads an excerpt from his memoir, "Tibetan Peace Pie" and reminisces about his old days in radio at local station KRAB.

Sound Effect is your weekly tour of ideas, inspired by the place we live. The show is hosted by knkx's Jennifer Wing.
