The Friday beer: Deschutes Brewery’s Abyss

The Abyss
Paul Gibson
The Abyss

2011 was a good year for beer drinkers. We saw a huge growth in new breweries, experimental ales and carefully crafted draft lists at bars and restaurants. I'm always on the lookout for something new to try but sometimes, during special occasions, you want to go with what you know. Stick with something you trust.

For me, when I heard The Noble Fir would have Deschutes' The Abyss on tap New Years Eve I knew that would be the perfect beer to end the year. And it was.

The Abyss has been recognized as one of the best beers in the world. Just do a quick Google search and you can read all the accolades and see where it's nabbed gold medals. This dark Imperial Stout perfectly exudes chocolate, coffee and a bit of vanilla. It really is heavenly.

It was pretty awesome to end 2011 while enjoying one of my favorite beers. How did you end the year? What was the last beer you drank in 2011?

Guest contributor Paul Gibson originally hails from Carlsbad, New Mexico, but he prefers the Northwest’s cooler temperatures and its vast selection of hoppy delicious beers. As a kid, he first started taking photos with an Instamatic of his friends on their BMX bikes. Now he takes photos of beer, breweries and on occasion street photography, events and concerts—minus the Instamatic. You can find more photos and follow Paul on Twitter at @pdgibson.
