The Friday beer: Alaskan Brewing's Winter Ale

The Alaskan Winter Ale

The Alaskan Winter Ale

If anyone knows how to brew a winter beer it should be a brewery in Alaska. The Alaskan Winter Ale is a fine example of this seasonal style of beer – maltier, a higher ABV, something to help battle the cold days and long nights.

This beer's malty character is not too sweet and is complemented by a hint of fruit and spruce making it a perfect ale to settle down next to a cozy fire, which is exactly how I enjoyed this ale, next to a fire on a cool Seattle evening.

Do you find yourself drinking different styles of beer during different seasons? What brews are you reaching for as we transition from fall into winter?

NW Craft Brews” is a new weekly Web feature published Fridays here at KPLU.org. Let us know what your favorite beer is right now, either here or on our Facebook page. Cheers!

Guest contributor Paul Gibson originally hails from Carlsbad, New Mexico, but he prefers the Northwest’s cooler temperatures and its vast selection of hoppy delicious beers. As a kid, he first started taking photos with an Instamatic of his friends on their BMX bikes. Now he takes photos of beer, breweries and on occasion street photography, events and concerts—minus the Instamatic. You can find more photos and follow Paul on Twitter at @pdgibson.
