A Free Year of College Available to All Rainier Beach High Grads

Seattle Public Schools

Every student who graduates from Seattle’s Rainier Beach High School in the spring will be able to attend South Seattle Community College for free for a year.

The 13th Year Promise Scholarship pays for one year of tuition, or the equivalent of approximately $5,000, in an effort to increase the number of underrepresented students in higher education.

Funded by the college’s nonprofit foundation, the scholarship has been awarded to Cleveland High School graduates since 2008, and Chief Health International High School students since 2011. A total of 290 scholarships have been awarded since the program began.

According to the college, 50 percent of the scholarship’s recipients said they would not have attended college if not for the scholarship.
