Foss Maritime to Take Over Former Pulp Mill Site in Everett

The old Kimberly-Clark pulp mill site in Everett is getting a new lease on life. Foss Maritime plans to relocate its shipbuilding facility from Seattle to the 66-acre property on the Everett waterfront.

Foss's parent company Saltchuk has signed a purchase and sales agreement with Kimberly-Clark.

Saltchuk spokesman Paul Query says Foss has outgrown its current site on north Lake Union and the future move to Everett makes good business sense.

"We see the growth in our shipbuilding and shipyard business to be in vessels that are too large to fit through the Ballard Locks," he said. "We’ve been on the hunt for a site in the Northwest that gives us deepwater port and saltwater access, and this site in Everett fits the bill."

The company says it is the largest domestic tug and barge company on the Pacific Rim. Foss’ headquarters will remain in Seattle, but the shipbuilding move will bring 250 employees to Everett.

Kimberly-Clark closed its pulp mill last year after 80 years in operation.
