Celebrating The Living Bird: Seattle Photographer Gerrit Vyn

Seattle photographer Gerrit Vyn travels the world to capture images of wildlife – and above all, birds. He says they’re powerful indicators of environmental health. He aims to get people to connect with them as individuals, so that we care and want to preserve their habitat.

Vyn's pictures fill more than 200 pages of a new book called "The Living Bird". It’s published by Mountaineers Booksand commemorates the 100-year anniversary of theCornell Lab of Ornithology, for which Vyn works as a producer, capturing audio and video, as well as images such as those in the book.

He spoke with KPLU environment reporter Bellamy Pailthorp about his adventures and the sounds he has captured from remote locations all over the world.

Bellamy Pailthorp covers the environment for KNKX with an emphasis on climate justice, human health and food sovereignty. She enjoys reporting about how we will power our future while maintaining healthy cultures and livable cities. Story tips can be sent to bpailthorp@knkx.org.
