This week on Sound Effect, we share stories about the call of duty.

Wake-Up Call 

Knkx Morning Edition host Kirsten Kendrick wakes up in the middle of the night so that she can be on air, sharing the news at 5 every morning. We listen in to her morning routine after she gets the literal call to duty: her alarm clock. 

The Death Penalty

Frank Thompson, the former superintendent of the Oregon State Penitentiary, spent most of his life in support of the death penalty. He recalls how that all changedwhen he was tasked with overseeing Oregon's first execution in 32 years. 

A Voice For The Voiceless

Professional lip reader, Consuelo Gonzales, helps paralyzed patients communicate with their doctors. She and one of her patients explain why this can be so important in critical medical situations.  

Trick Riders 

The McMillan family in Soap Lake, Wash. has taken in seven foster children. Most of the kids are now accomplished horseback riders, often performing tricks at rodeos. Lynette McMillan explains whyshe felt drawn to adopt these kids and how the rodeo lifestyle helps them adjust to a new life.

Tacoma native and writer Jack Cameron has documented the victims of nearly every homicide in the city of Tacoma since 2006. He explains why he feels calledto write about these horrific incidents. 

The 442nd Battalion 

During World War II, Japanese-Americans were interned in camps along the West Coast. Despite discrimination, many volunteered to fight for the U.S. military. One of the last surviving Japanese-American World War II veterans remembers his experiences after Pearl Harbor.
