In the wake of the off- campus murder of one of its graduate students in Moscow last week, the University of Idaho is reaching out to the public to reassure family and friends that their loved ones are safe.
It is a parent’s worst fear — that your child has been sent out into the world but isn’t safe.
You could hear the anguish in the voice of UI President Duane Nellis on Friday as he made a public statement about the August 22nd murder of 22 year old UI graduate student Katy Benoit:
“Words aren’t sufficient at a time like this, but as parents ourself, we want Katie’s family to know that our hearts go out to them,” Nellis said.
Benoit was killed outside her off-campus residence. Moscow Police believe she was killed by a former UI faculty member with whom she had had a prior relationship.
Nellis said he wants families to know that their children’s safety is the university’s top priority. UI student body president Samantha Perez said Friday that she believes the campus and community are safe.
A memorial service for Katy Benoit is scheduled for 4:00 pm Tuesday afternoon at Boise High School, and plans are underway for a memorial service in Moscow.
