BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Bellingham City Council is on the verge of approving the purchase of a 47-acre tract of land along North Shore Road as part of the effort to preserve Lake Whatcom water quality.
The city will pay $2.2 million for the property, now owned by the Uy Family Limited Partnership, Whatcom Lands Inc. and Springland Co. LLC. Patty Fernandez is the city's real property manager. She told the council that the site contains 28 lots that could eventually become home sites if the property remains in private hands.
The city has been trying to prevent development in the Lake Whatcom watershed, because the lake's waters have shown increasing concentrations of phosphorus that enters the lake in runoff from developed areas
