The Jazz Journalists Association's annual Jazz Hero Award recipients were announced this morning.  Jazz Heroes are the advocates, altruists, activists, aiders and abettors of jazz who have had significant impact in their local communities.

The Jazz Hero awards are made on the basis of nominations from community members, and are presented by their local fans and friends in conjunction with the Jazz Journalists Association's annual Jazz Awards honoring significant achievements in jazz music and journalism.

Seattle's 2017 Jazz Hero is pianist/composer/educator Wayne Horvitz, whose partnership in the Royal Room enriches Seattle's Columbia City neighborhood by bringing in regional and touring creative artists seven nights a week.

Mr. Horvitz leads his 15-piece Collective Music Ensemble at the Royal Room tonight, featuring the music of Thelonious Monk.

2014 Seattle Jazz Hero Jim Wilke presents the Jazz Hero Award to Wayne Horvitz at the Royal Room on Monday April 24 at 7 p.m., followed by the Seattle JazzEd All Star Combos performances at 7:30 p.m.  Both events are free and open to the public.
